Error: "read capacity failed"

Postby feri » Fri Dec 20, 2013 9:26 am

How can this error occurr?
This error occurrs when attaching an USB-Device.
A error massage similair to this is shown: "Initializing USB Stick failed: LUN 0: first read capacity failed: -1, ..."

Technical Information
This error can have different reasons.
It is a communication problem between the Plugin and the USB-Device.

Solution
Sometimes the error was caused by Multi-Card Readers which do not have inserted a Card or a defective card.
Also the order in which the device is attach can be important.
For example try first inserting the sd-card into the card reader and then attach the card-reader to the USB-OTG cable.
Or the other way around.

If your device has this error reproducible, please post the exact model number.

I am able to get this error quite reliably, using a digital camera - a Panasonic Lumix GM-1.

This camera is connected via USB-OTG to a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (N9005) running the latest Samsung Android 4.4.2 release (rooted). I have sent the debug log via email.

There also seems to be somewhat of a timing issue - with the free version everything worked perfectly, always, but with the (now purchased) version, I get the problem quite often.

I think the Panasonic Lumix GM-1 does something strange with the size information.

My use case is to get the files off the camera immediately onto cloud storage.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hello DuckAmuck,

do you use the latest update v1.3.11.
This release fixed some timing problems on starting up Total Commander automatically, when attaching an USB device.

Some users reported that the error vanished after removing the plugin as default app for storage devices.

Hello,

I am receiving the same error and would like to know if a patch is available. The error happens frequently, but not every time I attach a USB stick. Once it starts, though, it happens consistently until I power off and then restart my Nexus. In fact, the only work-around I have found is to power down and restart the tablet. USB Stick Plugin is a very good app when it works, so If a patch is available for this problem, I would really appreciate it.

USB Stick Plugin-TC Trial version 1.3.11
Tablet: ASUS Nexus 7 32 gb, Android 4.4.2

I receive this problem with two different USB sticks.
Kingston DT101 G2 4gb
Sandisk Cruzer 8gb

Thanks for your help.

I also have the error. I think it's only when I use my Transcend USB 3.0 All-In-1 Multi Memory Card Reader TS-RDF8. I've tried different sequences of plugging the card and the reader but with no success. It happens when copying CR2 files from an CF card. I've tried to copy from the card to the phone sd card, the phone extsdcard and to a 500Gb hard disk attached to the usb otg hub but I still get constant failures, sometimes after 2 files, 7 files, 12 files. There is no consistency with the error except I know it's going to happen. I really don't want to be buying numerous card readers just to test if they work. Any help would be gratefully received

Update, I've bought another USB card reader, this time a USB2 reader and I still get the same errors. This app could be the answer to all my prayers if it only worked. If you want any error logs or anything else then please ask as I'm desperate to get this working.

Hello KevinA,

i Know there are some problems with MultiCard Reader.
There are different possible problems.

I tried the Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0

I inserted a SanDisk Ultra II 4.0GB formatted with FAT32 into the multicard reader and then attached it to my Nexus 10 with Android 5.0.
The Root folder appears.
I copied some files (together 100MB) from my tablet to the CompactFlash card.
Then I copied the same files from the CF into a new folder of my tablet and tested, that they are okay.
There were no errors.

You have the same multi card reader.
Can you please try the same with a CompactFlash Card.

Best regards,
