connecting xbox360 controller (wired)

Hi
Trying to get a xbox360 controller working with different Emulators. Gets power via usb and total commanders recognizes the device but when i try to assign The buttons it seems The Devise is not recognized correctly. All 4 leds on The controller are flashing. When i connect the controller to my older nexus 7,only one of the leds is on (but constantly) . Any recommondations concerning the xbox360 controller?
